Winifred Welcomes You to 2018!

January 1, 2018 by Alan Leave a Comment

Winifred

Happy New Year!

We enter the new year with a new family member, Winifred. Augie did his research (which included creating a PowerPoint presentation) to learn about how to care for Bearded Dragons, so mom and dad allowed this beautiful girl to join our household. (A big thanks to our friend Dave, who not only originally rescued this pretty lady, but who also was kind enough to allow her to move in with us.)

BabyCenter says Winifred means friend of peace and Nameberry translates it as blessed peacemaking.

To everyone in Strasburg, surrounding towns, the I-70 Corridor, and everywhere on this small planet of yours, may peace and prosperity come to you and yours in 2018…and may you be called a…

Friend of peace.

Happy 4th of July! (2016)

July 4, 2016 by Alan Leave a Comment

Motorcyclist with American flagHappy Independence Day everyone! (240 awesome years and counting….)

I am just back from my Cub Scout Pack 439 Cubmaster duties. First, we marched with Troop 439 at the front of the Independence Day parade in Byers, Colorado. (I am so proud of our boys!) Second, we met up at Lions Park in Strasburg, ate lunch, and then watched a Cub Scout/Boy Scout/visitors water fight that moved from water balloons to squeezing water bottles at each other. 🙂

The parade had all the usual…floats…old cars…politicians…emergency vehicles…and since we are in cowboy/cowgirl country…horses…and one goat. 🙂

Now, I should note that I had to march in the parade, so I tried to snap photos of everything ahead of time. However, since we were at the front of the parade, I was able to take a bunch of pictures walking back to the car. Before sharing those images, however, here are four videos…starting off with the 2016 Dust Devils doing a little dancing:

Their float also has this cool fake shotgun action:Continue Reading

Remembering the Fallen (2016)

May 30, 2016 by Alan Leave a Comment

Rifles with flags in the backgroundStrasburg has no cemetery (to my knowledge), so on Memorial Day we join our neighbors in Bennett to remember those who have given everything so we can have the freedoms we cherish.

The first remembrance was at the Mount View Cemetery at 10:00AM, and the second at the memorial beside the Bennett Recreation Center at 1:30PM. Here is a video from the first one with a couple of biplane flyovers, a 21 gun salute, and taps:

Four gravestones: WW I, WW II, Korea, and VietnamWords can not properly express what we owe the men and women who gave their lives to protect us; nor can they compensate the wives, husbands, parents, and children left behind for what it cost them in tears and heartache.

We cannot thank those who are no longer with us, but we do thank their families. May God bless you and yours this Memorial Day…and may God bless America!

Happy New Year!

January 1, 2016 by Alan Leave a Comment

2016 Happy New Year!Strasburg Rocks! wishes you and yours a Happy New Year!

2015 had its ups and its downs…but, for us, one of its ups was this awesome town and its great people. If you are reading this and do not live in Strasburg, come by for a visit. Although there are probably a couple grumps within our population you could run into :-), it’s far more likely you’ll leave happier than you arrived.

Alan with New Year 2016 "hat"And, if you are going to be in the area and want to say hi, please contact us.

Whether you live in Strasburg or not, may 2016 be your best year ever! It’ll be our first complete year here…and we are looking forward to it!

Merry Christmas!

December 25, 2015 by Alan 1 Comment

Happy Holidays lights

The stockings are emptied; the gifts are open. What remains is more important: time with loved ones.

Merry Christmas signPerhaps the greatest gift the Lord gave us in 2015 is a new home in a new town. From the first day we visited Strasburg, Colorado, we have seen the beauty of its land and its people. That beauty is what inspired, and continues to inspire, Strasburg Rocks!

Happy Holidays lights by the Strasburg Convenience StoreWe are slowly unearthing all that Strasburg and the surrounding area has to offer; it is like unwrapping magnificent gifts year-round. One of the more recent discoveries was the annual Christmas celebration downtown. We were remiss then in not photographing the beautiful decorations along Strasburg’s main thoroughfare, but hopefully have made it up with a video of driving through the town late Christmas Eve (or early this Christmas morning, depending on your perspective):

Wooden carolers in front of the Strasburg Post OfficeNow, we stated that the greatest gift God blessed us with in 2015 was a home (not just a house) in Strasburg…but, of course, it pales in comparison to the greatest gift ever bestowed; one that was for all who will accept it. The 50th anniversary of “A Charlie Brown Christmas” makes it apropos to remember that sacrifice from above with the same words that Linus used when Charles Shultz bucked precedent and included these verses in a Christmas special:Continue Reading

So may I suggest
The secret of Christmas
It’s not the things you do
At Christmas time
But the Christmas things you do
All year through

It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas – In Strasburg!

December 5, 2015 by Alan Leave a Comment

Wooden carolers in front of the Strasburg Post OfficeI’m a bit tuckered today (up early to help decorate the church we attend in Centennial), so just a quick post to say how terrific the festivities in downtown Strasburg were today. If you made it, you know exactly what I am talking about: free food (including being able to decorate your own Christmas cookies), free drinks (at least hot cocoa and hot apple cider), hayrides (thanks to a huge tractor), a beautifully Christmas-tized center of town, and more…like reindeer and pictures with Santa!

Although it was helping out with the Cub Scouts that brought me down there (we were distributing the free hot apple cider provided by…and in front of…Hank’s Hardware), I am glad my tired, aching bones didn’t keep me home.  After the next shift relieved us, Michelle, Augie, and I checked out what was going on, wrapping up by visiting the great people at The Pizza Shop and…well, you can guess what we had for dinner. 🙂

Oh, and in front of The Pizza Shop was a brass band playing Christmas carols. Does it get any better than that?!:

Merry Christmas everyone!

Happy Thanksgiving!

November 26, 2015 by Alan Leave a Comment

Turkey and boyI am not sure those who haven’t been able to live in a place like Strasburg can understand just how blessed we small town folks are. Like the vast majority Americans, we have plenty to be thankful for, but we (in this tremendous community) additionally have great businesses, great schools, and great people…

Like you.

We are thankful for Strasburg…and thankful for you regardless of where you live. Thanks for reading this blog or following us on social media. You make it all worthwhile. But, most of all…

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy 4th of July!

Rocket and fireworksHappy 4th of July everyone!

Yes, I know it’s a bit late in the day to say so…but we’ve been busy with friends…starting with breakfast in the morning, rocket launching late afternoon, and celebrating in the evening.

Interested in what the launches were like? Here you go:

And speaking of launching…Continue Reading

Ground Control to Major Tom

May 31, 2015 by Alan Leave a Comment

Astronaut Augie had his first launch on Memorial Day. Sadly, due to choosing an over-ambitious vehicle (it could fly as much as 1,100 feet) and a badly placed sun, we do not know where it landed… 🙂

However, as rocket scientists Augie and I have learned from our mistakes and next time our rocket will be limited to 350 feet…Continue Reading

Memorial Day, 2015

May 25, 2015 by Alan Leave a Comment

Grave topped with rifle and helmetThe Strasburg Rocks! logo’s colors were purposely chosen from the American flag palette. We really appreciate our country…and those who have died for it.

Let us never forget freedom is not free.

The three most important holidays are Christmas, because Jesus was born; Good Friday, because Jesus died for our sins; and Memorial Day, because soldiers died for our freedom.
