On the Farm: Thursday, August 13, 2020

August 13, 2020 by Alan Leave a Comment

Riding by their irrigation on my bicycle a couple times, I asked for and got permission from Burchfield Farms to fly over their land. Although the water wasn’t on high, I think it’s still a pretty cool video. But first, a 180 degree panorama across the street from them:

180 degree panorama of the dusk sky

Okay, now for the video 🙂

Drone Bicycle Ride

August 1, 2020 by Alan Leave a Comment

Video snapshot from droneFirst use of my DJI Mavic Air 2 to follow me on the bicycle…thus why I stop a couple times to make sure it wouldn’t crash into wires, telephone poles, etc. 🙂

Also, the batteries usually last 20-30 minutes, so I have to check on why they don’t appear to have been fully charged. Hmmm…

“A Storm Is a Threatenin'” Bicycle Ride and Convenience Store Visit

July 27, 2020 by Alan Leave a Comment

Video snapshot of rideHere is your chance to join me on a complete bicycle ride, along with my usual near-the-end-of-ride Strasburg Convenience Store visit.

Recorded with a GoPro HERO8 Black, and originally live streamed. Kudos to GoPro (for the camera and their app that streamed it so long) and Restream.io (which allowed me to stream to multiple places at once).

Quick Sunday Night Flight

July 12, 2020 by Alan Leave a Comment

I was busy with a bunch ‘o other stuff today, but wanted to get the drone out at least for a quick flight. I wanted to go all the way to the church in the distance, but when a car went down the back road, I figured it best to wait until I got a better lay of the land.

Music: “Hologram Sun” by Lumado from the audiio music service (https://audiio.com).

Summer Time Warp Ride (7.11.2020)

July 11, 2020 by Alan Leave a Comment

It always feels good to get out on the bicycle, even if the temperature is 90+ degrees. 🙂

Taken with a GoPro HERO8 Black using 15x Time Warp.

Music: “All Together” by More Like Georgia from the audiio music service.

The video was uploaded at 4K, which means I could also grab cool images like this. 🙂

Deer Trail Water Tower

July 6, 2020 by Alan Leave a Comment

Deer Trail water towerGrowing up (and living half my life) in New England, I was not used to water towers (they were infrequent, at best).

Now they are one of my favorite parts of living on the high plains. I may always be most partial to Strasburg’s, but Deer Trail’s is also a beauty:

A huge thanks to Deer Trail Mayor James Johnson for permission to use my DJI Mavic Air 2 to film the tower…and to Tailor and everyone at the town hall for their friendliness!

The background music is “Quick Step” by High Tide from the Audiio.com music service.

Congratulations 2020 Strasburg Graduates!

May 17, 2020 by Alan Leave a Comment

Graduates in car throwing hatsStrasburg won’t let the Coronavirus get in the way of us celebrating our awesome 2020 graduates!

Congratulations Strasburg Seniors! Pat yourselves on the back!

We were lucky enough to have this start in our neighborhood. Some cool cars were involved in the parade. 🙂

To all the 2020 graduates…in Strasburg and elsewhere…I know this was a suboptimal way to end your secondary education…but you made it.

Great work!

Remember to Look Right When Flying

May 13, 2020 by Alan Leave a Comment

Bad news:

I wasn’t looking right in the second flight tonight. Crash. Boom. Bang.

Good news:

After popping a couple pieces back and getting the gimbal unstuck, it flew again (as proven from the last flight).

Even better news:

I purchased DJI Care Refresh, so I’ll send it in and get a replacement. 🙂

The videos use DJI’s Quickshot feature (in this case, one where you identify an object, and it flies around it).

Boy do I love my DJI Mavic Air 2…oh, and how easy DJI made it to set-up the replacement!

I Didn’t Crash It the First Day!

May 11, 2020 by Alan Leave a Comment

Drone snapshotOkay, I’m sold. Well, I was sold before, since I already bought the DJI Mavic Air 2. 🙂

I never flew a drone before today, and this is like the second or third flight…once I got to play with it after work and dinner.

Initially I just wanted to record the sundown (since we have houses blocking our western view)…but it quickly became clear that wouldn’t be an exciting video…so then I tested moving it around, going higher, etc.

Probably still mostly a practice video, but still kind of cool…if I do say so myself. 🙂

Update: Or the second day:

It was really windy, so my bravery with the drone was reduced. What is amazing is that the jerkiness here and there is all on me as I’m trying things. The DJI handles the video in a way that strong wind is imperceptible.

Of course, it has its limits. 🙂

RC Car at Strasburg Community Park

September 22, 2019 by Alan Leave a Comment

During the crashWhat a beautiful fall day! Which means it was a great time to bring the RC car, with a GoPro on top, to the Strasburg Community Park. Key times for crashes:

  • 1:55 (basketball court)
  • 7:49 (baseball field #1)
  • 9:06 (baseball field #2)

P.S. The slow-motion isn’t near as smooth as I wish. I thought I was recording at 1080 and 240FPS, but it was 2.7K and 30FPS.

But, it is what it is, and still fun. 🙂

A Car’s View of the Strasburg Car Wash

September 21, 2019 by Alan Leave a Comment

Video snapshotSo, admit it, you’ve always wondered what a car feels like in a car wash.

🙂

Well, here is your chance to find out!  Last night, around sundown, I put my GoPro HERO6 Black in a waterproof case, hooked it to the front of The Orangutan (what we call our VW Tiguan), and gave The Orangutan a much needed bath.

Now, I’m not saying I want to go through the car wash outside of a car, but it didn’t seem to frightening. 🙂

P.S. The car wash is brushless and does pretty well. The full works costs $15.

P.P.S. Hat tip to the Mrs. for the idea of GoPro’ing a car wash.

Quick Trip to the Zoo (Summer Is Almost Over)

September 20, 2019 by Alan Leave a Comment

Bird at the zooIt was a teacher workshop day, so we quickly snuck over to the zoo for a quick visit. Augie got a bunch ‘o Pokemon in Pokemon Go along with hanging out with a friend.  It was a beautiful day, and although the GoPro isn’t zoomed in, you’ll still see some neat views (close and distant). On the right is a bird that decided to nest (with eggs?) near the fence.

Hope summer wrapped up well for you and yours!

Making Subs at Byers Country Store

August 24, 2019 by Alan Leave a Comment

No bicycle video today, but how about seeing how the awesome sub I eat whenever I ride to the Byers Country Store is made?!:

Strasburg Rocks! Recommended! The sub is almost done!Actually, what you see there is two subs being made (kind of three actually). This time my wife and son met me at the store and we had lunch together. So, first is her sub…and then his and mine (he eats the half with no vegetables).

A big five bulls recommendation for the Byers Country Store!

30x Bicycle Ride to Byers

August 19, 2019 by Alan Leave a Comment

Dad and MikeyMy oldest son is in down for a few days, so he an I beat the heat today by heading for a bicycle ride before the temperatures got into the 90s.

Yes, he made dad feel old. (I used to “pull” him along on bicycle rides back in New Hampshire. No longer.)

Either way, here’s a quick couple minute version of the ride. (GoPro Time Lapse at 30x.)

Happy Monday!

P.S. “Lucky Day – Instrumental” by Zac Nelson (from Storyblocks Audio).
