R.I.P. Mosquito and Happy Retirement Galaxy Gold

September 13, 2015 by Alan Leave a Comment

Estes MosquitoAs promised, below is a video from yesterday’s Strasburg Rocks! Rocket Club rocket launches. Sadly, we had two casualties…

The Estes Galaxy Gold (first rocket fired off) popped its bottom off when the charge for the parachute exploded. With a little glue to make it whole, the Galaxy Gold will start retirement after a short career (this one flight).  Also…and I didn’t get a video of it (operator error on my part)…but the Estes Mosquito was never found (it is what is pictured on the launchpad in this post). My friend Leo and I watched its flight very closely, but never saw it return to earth. I suppose it is more M.I.A. then R.I.P. 🙂

The Estes Mosquito is a classic rocket…basically a way to stick fins to an engine. 🙂 I’m sure we’ll buy another one.

It wasn’t all bad news (and the Galaxy Gold’s flight was kind of cool even with its permanent injury); the Estes Summit and the Galaxy Planet Probe both returned to earth unharmed. The Planet Probe is the last one in the video…it’s become one of my favorites. (It is meant to use an engine without a parachute charge, but I didn’t have any…so as it approaches the ground you’ll see the Estes C6-5 engine suddenly slow it down a tiny bit.) Without further ado, the video:Continue Reading

Quest Aerospace Planet Probe

August 29, 2015 by Alan 2 Comments

Quest Aerospace Planet ProbeA reader of this blog (thank you!) told my wife she likes the rocket videos. Well, better late then never…here is the first Quest Aerospace model rocket I’ve purchased and built. The actual flight was two weeks ago (August 15, 2015). Successfully launched three times…and only one landed in the neighbor’s back yard. 🙂

Luckily, (a) they were home, (b) their dog didn’t eat it, and (c) they are friendly. 🙂

For your viewing pleasure, the Quest Aerospace Planet Probe:

Happy 4th of July!

July 4, 2015 by Alan Leave a Comment

Rocket and fireworksHappy 4th of July everyone!

Yes, I know it’s a bit late in the day to say so…but we’ve been busy with friends…starting with breakfast in the morning, rocket launching late afternoon, and celebrating in the evening.

Interested in what the launches were like? Here you go:

And speaking of launching…Continue Reading

Launching Off the Weekend

June 27, 2015 by Alan Leave a Comment

On the way to our weekly dad-son-only breakfast, we had a letter to drop off at the Strasburg Post Office…which just happens to be across the street from the local hardware store (Western Hardware). Last weekend we used up all our Estes rocket engines on Father’s Day, so it made sense to grab some more by walking over to that great establishment. However, we didn’t escape without an additional purchase. 🙂

And the first launch was successful!:

What are you doing this weekend? How has yours started off?

Mini Max

June 20, 2015 by Alan Leave a Comment

After church tomorrow I’ve got quite a bit of “work work” queued…so I snuck some family and hobby time in today. Part of the results:

Augie with the Estes Mini Max

The Mini Max is a classic Estes rocket (as is the larger original, Der Red Max)…and I will definitely take enough time off on Father’s Day so astronaut Augie can launch it…

P.S. This is the first “complete build” rocket I’ve done since Augie and I started this hobby.  Everything was white (with the exception of the naturally-colored balsa fins)…and nothing snapped together or was otherwise simple.  Sanding. Gluing. Rounding.  Air brushing (first time).

Having said that, Estes still says it was only a skill level 1. 🙂

Ground Control to Major Tom

May 31, 2015 by Alan Leave a Comment

Astronaut Augie had his first launch on Memorial Day. Sadly, due to choosing an over-ambitious vehicle (it could fly as much as 1,100 feet) and a badly placed sun, we do not know where it landed… 🙂

However, as rocket scientists Augie and I have learned from our mistakes and next time our rocket will be limited to 350 feet…Continue Reading
