Exit 310 (Home Sweet Home)

September 5, 2016 by Alan Leave a Comment

I just posted this picture on the Strasburg Rocks! Facebook Page with the label, “Home sweet home”:

Strasburg exit 310 sign

And that it is. We had an awesome 24 hour trip to and from Goodland, Kansas, but nothing beats where we live on the high plains!

Perhaps my favorite find in Goodland was this:

National Weather Service in Goodland, KS

Augie and I love checking out weather radars, and that’s the one we leverage out of Goodland now-and-then. (By the way, the best weather radar program for your iPhone is RadarScope.)

Although almost all of these pictures will show up in the Facebook embeds I post after, here are a few of the photos I grabbed (mainly on my iPhone 6S Plus):Continue Reading

Ride the Kit Carson County Carousel with Alan

September 5, 2016 by Alan Leave a Comment

Carousel horsePreviously, we posted a video of the historic (and awesome!) Kit Carson County Carousel filmed from the outside (which begins with an informative history). This time (from yesterday) we take you on the inside and you get to ride it with me, your humble Strasburg Rocks! correspondent.

Today is its last day for 2016 (although I’ve heard rumor of a Christmas event), it’s not too far from Strasburg, and it’s only 25 cents…so…why not?…celebrate Labor Day with a ride…or two…or three… πŸ™‚

(We plan on going for another ride when we travel back from Kansas today…)

Happy Labor Day folks!

Just Next Door in Goodland, Kansas

September 4, 2016 by Alan Leave a Comment

The FahrnersAfter the most awesome of birthday road trips for Augie, we decided that after church today we’d head to Goodland Kansas again.

This time we were a bit less ambitious and almost drove straight through…although we did stop for a treat at the I-70 Diner in Flagler, Colorado…

Inside the I-70 Diner

…and rode the Kit Carson County Carousel in Burlington, Colorado. (Video of that to follow in another post. It is taking a while to upload it to YouTube via the hotel Internet.)

But, we did finally make it to Kansas…

Leaving Colorado and entering Kansas signs

..and now are enjoying a calm night at the Holiday Inn Express…

Happy Labor Day and good night to all of you!

Kit Carson County Carousel

August 20, 2016 by Alan 1 Comment

Carousel horseEarlier this week I posted about Augie’s birthday road-trip to Kansas. One highlight of it was a visit to the Kit Carson County Carousel…a historical marvel. Although the video (which includes the carousel’s history and it in action) was also posted, I was able to download a high quality version from Facebook and make this “official” version with higher volume and a fancy Strasburg Rocks!intro and outro from a Fiverr gig:

Strasburg Rocks! Recommended! As is noted in the video, it costs only twenty-five cents. I can assure you it’ll be the best twenty-five cents you’ll spend. πŸ™‚

Oh, Kit Carson County Carousel is a definite We Recommend and gets 5 out of 5 bulls…thank you Robbie for the awesome experience!

2016 Birthday Road Trip

August 16, 2016 by Alan Leave a Comment

Goodland, Kansas water towerWe asked Augie what he wanted to do for his birthday and the result of that conversation was…

Road trip to Kansas! (Goodland, Kansas to be more specific.) Hitting the road yesterday it quickly morphed into a fun PokΓ©mon Go-related visit to PokΓ©stops between here and there. Instead of reposting all the pictures here, below is my public timeline on Facebook that documents the what/when/where. πŸ™‚

We were tuckered by the time we got home (late)…but I think birthday treks are in our future going forward. πŸ™‚

I think I’ll call this one “Augie’s First Annual Birthday Road Trip (and PokΓ©stop & PokΓ©mon Hunt).”

Without further ado…Continue Reading

And I Thought Strasburg Was Infested!

August 2, 2016 by Alan Leave a Comment

Once again work has forced to stay on a horrible island, in a horrible hotel, with a horrible view from my horribly high room:

View from the room (daytime)

Feel terrible for me, right?!

When I went out for dinner, Augie asked if I could use PokΓ©mon Go and get him some great water PokΓ©mon. For some reason it’s a bit harder to find water PokΓ©mon in Strasburg.

You know, in a place with absolutely no permanent water. Go figure. πŸ™‚

So, after dinner I fired upΒ PokΓ©mon Go and, right from get-go, they were all over the place. Below are pictures of each and every PokΓ©mon I caught for him, minus the first one at the surf shop my friend manages (something like a Pidgeotto). He also had an egg hatch, got an award, and went from a level 12 to a 13! (If the sameΒ PokΓ©mon exists twice in the gallery…then it means I caught more than one…)

Oh, and all kinds of stuff gathered from the myriadΒ PokΓ© Stops between the place I ate and my hotel!

Now, it’s 1:15AM my body’s time (just landed earlier today…well, yesterday for my body)…so to all a good night!

View from the room (nighttime)

P.S. The gallery will grow this week as I capture more…so check back! πŸ™‚

P.P.S. I really have to stop turning the game on. Since I finished (level up to 13 was that picture), I’ve gotten three PokΓ©mon he didn’t have before and hatched another egg. ‘Night all!

Hawaii (Glad to Be Home!)

July 3, 2016 by Alan Leave a Comment

Cityscape from in the waterI realize that after more than two weeks in paradise, it might be hard to believe I’m not just publishing this to rub it in. πŸ™‚

But I’m not. It is a test of a new gallery plug-in that I’ve purchased for a far better reason. (More to come on that hopefully soon.)

In either case, I was in Honolulu for 2+ weeks…fourth trip for work this year. These photos are from at least a couple of those visits. Now, you may find many boring or odd…but I have to admit I am not near the adventurer as others after traveling for my employers a lot over my career.

Hawaii is paradise, but I wouldn’t trade Strasburg for it, because truly Strasburg Rocks!

Well, now for the gallery… πŸ™‚Continue Reading
