All the Way from New Zealand!

October 10, 2015 by Alan Leave a Comment

Tecsun PL-880 tuning in a ham radio operatorI don’t know how many more Fridays there will be before it is too cold, but Augie and I spent the night in the tent again (and I am not sure who looks forward to or enjoys it more :-)). Although it doesn’t fix it 100%, being away from all the electromagnetic interference in the house means both AM & shortwave listening are better, so I live tweeted what I found again (as I did last week). Reception last night was amazing. I think the best since I started the hobby back up a couple months ago.

Before I put the stream of tweets below, I wanted to share the most exciting part of the evening, tuning in Radio New Zealand International (transmitting from New Zealand). The clip plays a few selections…and at the end has proof it is Radio New Zealand (they do a station id). This morning they had replied back on Twitter (also below) and I actually picked them up again! (Albeit, on another frequency.)

I didn’t get enough sleep last night, but I am still jazzed from all the neat, and often very distant, stations I picked up! Here is what I heard:

Another night braving the elements in our backyard tent…and I’ll be live tweeting my SWLing and DXing again. 🙂 pic.twitter.com/NqQmKSkxqO

1st signal found…NIST’s WWV time station on 2500 kHz. I’ve attached a video in case u’ve never heard a time station. pic.twitter.com/6N44KAuOej

— Alan (@AlanCult) October 10, 2015

Next up a couple Christian stations out of Tennessee, WWRB and WWCR on 3185 and 3215 kHz respectively. pic.twitter.com/NOmVDOIodn

— Alan (@AlanCult) October 10, 2015

Another time station, but this 1 is CHU out of Ottowa, Ontario (another video attached so u can hear). 3330 kHz. pic.twitter.com/e3K4P42Dd3

— Alan (@AlanCult) October 10, 2015

Wow, it took 4ever to get that last tweet 2 go (strange error related 2 video size I think). Now I’m listening 2 data streams around 3590kHz

— Alan (@AlanCult) October 10, 2015

Next up? Radio Verdad out of Chiquimula, Guatemala on 4055 kHz. Right now Spanish Christian music. pic.twitter.com/tUj27gZ4WS

— Alan (@AlanCult) October 10, 2015

WWCR 4840, the time station I can normally get 5000kHz, and Radio Rebelde 5025 kHz (out of Cuba). pic.twitter.com/T8Q1Hx6b3G

— Alan (@AlanCult) October 10, 2015

Propaganda disguised as news on Radio Habana 5040 & Coast to Coast with Art Bell discussing aliens/UFOs on 5085 kHz. pic.twitter.com/Y2hjNIoyeh

— Alan (@AlanCult) October 10, 2015

WTWW 5830, WRMI 5850, WWCR 5890, and Alcaravan Radio 5910 kHz out of Puerto Lleras, Columbia! pic.twitter.com/JROfGWcvI1

— Alan (@AlanCult) October 10, 2015

WWCR 5935, Radio Habana on 6000, 6060, & 6100, and Caribbean Beacon 6090. pic.twitter.com/vnBBj7IK7W

— Alan (@AlanCult) October 10, 2015

I am not 100% sure, but I think this is Radio Sanna out of Yemen (video attached). pic.twitter.com/QJw9kUKEZo

— Alan (@AlanCult) October 10, 2015

Here is 1 of my favorite things 2 find on shortwave: ham radio operators. Using lower side band ~7188 kHz. pic.twitter.com/RnIeWpEj2S

— Alan (@AlanCult) October 10, 2015

1 guy is giving the other guy a radio set 2 fix up. Clear conversation on both sides. From a web search of a phone number he gave 1 is KC6ME

— Alan (@AlanCult) October 10, 2015

@NIGHTW0LF87 Thanks for the reply. In the list of possible stations the only one that seemed to match was in Yemen. pic.twitter.com/821NomthyY

— Alan (@AlanCult) October 10, 2015

Hmmm…not sure what station is on 7355 kHz, & I don’t want 2 listen 2 this guy longer to hope 4 a station break. 🙂 pic.twitter.com/qosPtOlOoR

— Alan (@AlanCult) October 10, 2015

Radio Marti 7405, WRMI 7455, and two unknown stations on 7515 and 7565 kKz (Spanish and English respectively). pic.twitter.com/Wr76zaDU08

— Alan (@AlanCult) October 10, 2015

Actually, that last one was WRMI 7570 kHz. I had the bandwidth so wide it came in clear on 7565 too… pic.twitter.com/CSndhTV2Ug

— Alan (@AlanCult) October 10, 2015

I think this may be a BBC broadcast in the Hausa language transmitted from Ascension Island. pic.twitter.com/8ZT2Ta8GlQ

— Alan (@AlanCult) October 10, 2015

WRMI 9955, time station 10000 (hardly audible), and Radio New Zealand International 11725 from Rangaitaki! pic.twitter.com/g13XyYqg0s

— Alan (@AlanCult) October 10, 2015

Finally, proof it is Radio New Zealand International I am listening to on 11725kHz! @radionz #need2sleep #toopsyched pic.twitter.com/IPXPlPh6Ur

— Alan (@AlanCult) October 10, 2015

.@radionz I’m listening 2 u in Strasburg, Colorado, USA on 11725 kHz…backyard camping with this (sleeping) 8 yr-old… pic.twitter.com/j9SHeWfXiL

— Alan (@AlanCult) October 10, 2015

Well folks, as excited as I am to get so many great stations…I need to sleep ‘cause Augie will wake up early. ’Night, and God bless! #swling

— Alan (@AlanCult) October 10, 2015

Okay, one last one for tonight (and the last one I found)…Radio Brasilia 11780 kHz. ‘Night and God bless again. 🙂 pic.twitter.com/mMaqeBCuF9

— Alan (@AlanCult) October 10, 2015

@AlanCult that's awesome! ??

@AlanCult email us some postal info to webmaster@radionz.co.nz and we'll send you some RNZ postcards.

— Radio New Zealand (@radionz) October 10, 2015

@radionz Thanks for the postcard offer…just sent the e-mail. My eight year old will be so excited! Have a great weekend!

— Alan (@AlanCult) October 10, 2015

Wow! I told Augie I had heard Radio Ne Zealand last night…and what do we pick up on 6170 kHz this morning?! @radionz pic.twitter.com/LnMFxQ14bc

— Alan (@AlanCult) October 10, 2015

Radio Taiwan International. I think last night & this morn r the best SW reception since starting the hobby back up. pic.twitter.com/qaOL2SqCTZ

— Alan (@AlanCult) October 10, 2015

A ham radio operator 7195, VOA in Korean 7460 Philippines, WWRC 7490, & a mystery Christian station 9265 kHz (WINB?) pic.twitter.com/N6EBrrda4k

Well, there’s more SW I’m picking up…but Augie is ready 4 breakfast.Have a great Saturday everyone! #viewfromthetent pic.twitter.com/XAtbTIw95D

— Alan (@AlanCult) October 10, 2015

I do hope you all are having a great Saturday…or whatever day it is when you read this. 🙂

P.S. Last night’s reception was thanks to a Tecsun PL-880 shortwave radio, a Sangean ANT-60 shortwave antenna, and great atmospheric conditions. 🙂

P.P.S. And getting Yemen was pretty cool too!
