Kudos to Chris Oakley of C&T Auto Repair!

December 24, 2015 by Alan Leave a Comment

Santa as a mechanicYou know you’ve done something worthwhile when it’s being emulated over 1,000 miles away…twice:

KUSA – The heartwarming story of an Eastern Plains auto mechanic who footed a $1,500 repair bill for a struggling single father, has inspired people across the country.

Chris Oakley, owner of C&T Auto Repair in Strasburg, Colorado gave the early Christmas gift to Cory Grimes. Grimes works as a part-time dishwasher at High Plains Diner in Bennett and cares for his 7-year-old son who has autism.

It would break “fair use” to quote much more of this article, but please read how Chris’ actions were emulated in Wisconsin and Louisiana:

“Mechanic’s act of kindness creates chain reaction”

The person blessed in Louisiana by the free service said the mechanic was “Santa Claus.” Seems to me Santa Claus actually lives in Strasburg and owns C&T Auto Repair. 🙂

Building Strasburg

October 31, 2015 by Alan Leave a Comment

Ron Morse at his desk
A while back I sat down with Ron Morse, Pauls Homes‘ local representative. I’ve know Ron since March, when he was kind enough to stay late on a Saturday to allow my wife, son, and I to check out a new house in their Coyote Ridge development. We bought that home…but not only did we get a house in a great town, I got a good friend in Ron. He was kind enough to agree to an interview about the company he works for, what they’ve done up to now in Strasburg, and what their future plans are…along with more about himself. (Pauls Homes and Ron received 5 out of 5 bulls and “We Recommend” from Strasburg Rocks! in our review.)

Who is Pauls Homes?

Pauls Homes is a subsidiary of The Pauls Corporation, a real estate and investment development company. They are heavily involved in commercial, light industrial, and apartments. With residential units, they are not like DR Horton, building huge complexes, instead creating developments sized in the couple hundreds. Sometimes they finish what another developer didn’t complete (e.g. the last 50 homes where someone else failed). With Coyote Ridge they built all the units, but the land was in foreclosure and the company saw a vision and opportunity (with Denver growing) and purchased it.

What have they built so far in Strasburg?

Pauls Homes has been building in Strasburg for twenty years, completing three developments, soon to complete one more, in phase one (of four) for a fifth, just starting a sixth, and planning to build a seventh. They have been here for the “long haul” and will continue to be here. Those that have already been finished or have sold units are:Continue Reading

On a Bicycle Ride to Byers (FIRE!)

September 26, 2015 by Alan Leave a Comment

Fire equipmentOne of the greatest appeals of Strasburg is its small town nature…but contrary to what some people think, small town does not equal boring. 🙂 Today I decided to be more ambitious with my bicycle ride and visit downtown Byers (about a 12 mile round trip I figured). However, a bit west of Byers I had to stop to call 911 for two brush fires…a small one where I was and a larger one back even further west that I could see. Here’s a video I grabbed riding back to the second one:

Although I had been near both of the brush fires, I didn’t know what caused them…and chatting quickly with one of the firefighters…found out that they are pretty common, caused by someone driving a vehicle dragging something that creates sparks. Makes me very appreciative of our local fire departments.

Continuing back to Strasburg I passed a third one…so assuming it was a car or truck throwing sparks, it caused a bit of local havoc. Stay safe folks, and make sure nothing metal is ever dragging from you vehicle driving around our area. 🙂

P.S. Not bad video wise riding uphill and holding an iPhone 6 Plus with one hand, eh? 🙂

P.P.S. In case you are interested, a few more picture. Not sure what happened…I thought I had snapped pictures of the first fire I saw…but didn’t have any on my iPhone or cameras.

“Man shot, killed after car chase on I-70 near Strasburg”

June 6, 2015 by Alan Leave a Comment

Heading back from today’s American Heart Association Heart Walk in Denver, I happened upon the largest number of police vehicles in one place I’ve ever seen. This is how it was captured by my Cobra dashcam:

I assumed that it meant something horrible had happened, and sure enough:

“Man shot, killed after car chase on I-70 near Strasburg”

A shorter story is also available here:

“Police say 1 dead after morning car chase near Strasburg”

Prayers for the family of the man and the police and other first responders involved.

P.S. Here is a small, grainier gif version of the video:Continue Reading
