Tent Life

October 17, 2015 by Alan Leave a Comment

Tecsun PL-398BTTecsun PL-310ETYesterday, a four day weekend started for Augie, so he and I slept in the tent two days in a row. Let’s just say last night was just enough colder where dad definitely was uncomfortable and woke up quite a bit. Nothin’ layers can’t handle during future excursions.

I hope. 🙂

As for Augie…plent toasty it appears. (Of course, he is using my colder weather sleeping bag with a second one his cousin Evan gave him.)

Pictured at the top of this post are the two radios I used to check out shortwave and AM last night. The one on the left is a Tecsun PL-380BT and the right is a Tecsun PL310ET. I spent most of the time with the former…but, just as was true the previous night with the beefier Tecsun PL-880…shortwave reception wasn’t near as good as last week. I also didn’t live tweet every find this time…just the highlights.

So, without further ado…

Will be shortwave listening with a Tescun PL-398BT and PL-310ET. Augie is roughing it with Tom & Jerry. #tentlife pic.twitter.com/bisHK9Hs3D

One of the reasons I like the Tecsun PL-398BT so much is it lighted keys. (The Kaito KA1103 also has them.) #swling pic.twitter.com/rnxDoq2lpk

Second time i’ve found Jim Bakker (disgraced PTL televangelist) tonight on WRMI transmitters. pic.twitter.com/mcsFenDn3b

Was listening to @WBCQThePlanet on 7490 kHz up to a few minutes ago before it cut out. Greetings Monticello, Maine from Strasburg, Colorado.

Radio China International broadcasting in English on 9790 kHz from Cuba. Very clear. pic.twitter.com/hrjqFtKAuS

Okay…1st Jim Bakker…now this guy sounds like Jimmy Swaggart. Maybe not. WRMI 7455 kHz. #disgracedtelevangelistnight pic.twitter.com/HmgCpnXO5p

I’ve got Art Bell talking about super powers on 560 AM and Alex Jones discussing UFOs on 4840 kHz (WWCR). pic.twitter.com/Ejl2oWrUZt

The Tecsun PL-398BT appears to have better shortwave reception than the PL-310ET. Still love the little guy.

Listening to Classic Country KSJB from ND on both radios on 600 AM – Greetings @ksjbjamestown from Strasburg, CO! pic.twitter.com/cMlAlQ2gxw

By the way, I don’t know if it got any lower…but the coldest I saw it using the thermostat in the PL-398BT was 48 degrees. In a tweet I noted how I like the lighted keypad on that radio. I also like how both the PL-398BT and PL-310ET have built in thermostats. I know it probably seems like an odd addition, but it is neat. Oh, the picture I have of the PL-398BT above doesn’t show how it looks, or that it has two speakers:

Tecsun PL-398BT

I didn’t actually mean to take that image with a flash, so that’s why the left speaker is cut off. Yes, the PL-398BT has dual speakers…and it supports bluetooth (the “BT” in the model number)…plus a whole bunch of other great features.

Before I wrap up, however, here is how the previous night went with the Tecsun PL-880 (starting of with a video with Augie):

Augie and I are camping again…so I’ll be live tweeting shortwave listening—just highlights this time. Greetings! pic.twitter.com/82uHsB6140

Listening to Coast to Coast on @newstalk1010 CFRX on 6070 kHz from Toronto…pretty clear here in Strasburg, CO… pic.twitter.com/xNf4CRXE4o

@radionz Sadly, not picking you up right now. 🙁 Any good frequency for me to try right now?

— Alan (@AlanCult) October 16, 2015

— Alan (@AlanCult) October 16, 2015

“@radionz: @AlanCult Where in the world are you?” Strasburg, Colorado, USA. Picked you up last Saturday on shortwave clearly (twice).

— Alan (@AlanCult) October 16, 2015

The temperature has remained pretty constant, but the wind has kicked up. #tentlife #loveit pic.twitter.com/nJKdTfLROd

— Alan (@AlanCult) October 16, 2015

@AlanCult Nice. They pump out 50kW. I listen to them all over TX. Interesting what you can get on AM when the sun goes down.

— Ш☤ʟʟ $αη∂εяṧ (@Will_C_Sanders) October 16, 2015

@Will_C_Sanders Yes…and I have loved that effect since I had my first AM/FM radio as a kid…plastic one with tubes where only AM worked….

— Alan (@AlanCult) October 16, 2015

Thanks @radionz! Although not as clear as last weekend, here in Strasburg, CO I am listening to you on 9700 kHz. pic.twitter.com/VPi6w2E3mg

— Alan (@AlanCult) October 16, 2015

@730CKDM Thanks for the reply…I can’t pick you up right now, but do look forward to doing so future nights!
