Bicycle Ride, Clouds, and a Review

September 2, 2016 by Alan Leave a Comment

I’m on day two of a six day vacation…although “vacation” doesn’t seem to equal “slow down” for me. ๐Ÿ™‚

A bit earlier this afternoon I came back from a bicycle ride to and from Bennett (okay, I’ll admit it, I went to McDonald’s!)…and on the way snapped these photos of my favorite spot during that ride (which, I assume, is in Bennett):

Somewhat dry creek

Continuing to where I had to make a sharp left to stay on Route 36, I really liked these clouds:Continue Reading

Crickets, Trains, and Sunsets (August, 2016)

August 27, 2016 by Alan Leave a Comment

Western sunsetI’ll admit…it has been a hard week…and a hard day. But, I was smart enough to climb on my bicycle and get a chance to…at least for a moment…

Forget about that and remember just how amazing God’s creation is…

Here is the first video I took…wanted to capture the train sound in the background (and got crickets too!):

Here is a quick toy camera time-lapse of 10 minutes of today’s sundown:

And here is a gallery of pictures I took while getting eaten alive by mosquitos: ๐Ÿ™‚Continue Reading

Kit Carson County Carousel

August 20, 2016 by Alan 1 Comment

Carousel horseEarlier this week I posted about Augie’s birthday road-trip to Kansas. One highlight of it was a visit to the Kit Carson County Carousel…a historical marvel. Although the video (which includes the carousel’s history and it in action) was also posted, I was able to download a high quality version from Facebook and make this “official” version with higher volume and a fancy Strasburg Rocks!intro and outro from a Fiverr gig:

Strasburg Rocks! Recommended! As is noted in the video, it costs only twenty-five cents. I can assure you it’ll be the best twenty-five cents you’ll spend. ๐Ÿ™‚

Oh, Kit Carson County Carousel is a definite We Recommend and gets 5 out of 5 bulls…thank you Robbie for the awesome experience!

2016 Birthday Road Trip

August 16, 2016 by Alan Leave a Comment

Goodland, Kansas water towerWe asked Augie what he wanted to do for his birthday and the result of that conversation was…

Road trip to Kansas! (Goodland, Kansas to be more specific.) Hitting the road yesterday it quickly morphed into a fun Pokรฉmon Go-related visit to Pokรฉstops between here and there. Instead of reposting all the pictures here, below is my public timeline on Facebook that documents the what/when/where. ๐Ÿ™‚

We were tuckered by the time we got home (late)…but I think birthday treks are in our future going forward. ๐Ÿ™‚

I think I’ll call this one “Augie’s First Annual Birthday Road Trip (and Pokรฉstop & Pokรฉmon Hunt).”

Without further ado…Continue Reading

Strasburg Home Town Days (2016) โ€“ Part 3

August 14, 2016 by Alan Leave a Comment

National Honor Society sponsored breakfast at the elementary schoolAwesome National Honor Society breafast! What a great start to a beautiful day! Although normally we’d be at church on a Sunday morning, our new Strasburg church plant doesn’t start up until next Sunday…so off we went to check out some of today’s activities, starting with a delicious breakfast at the Strasburg Elementary School sponsored by the National Honor Society.

After that it was time for Mr. Ed’s Cool Classic Car Show…and this video will give you a little flavor of it:

I didn’t videotape every entry, but the gallery a bit further down will include photos of every vehicle that was there when I was.

So…we have breakfast…an amazing car show…what next?! Mud volleyball of course!:Continue Reading

Strasburg Home Town Days (2016) โ€“ Part 2

August 13, 2016 by Alan Leave a Comment

Colorado Vintage BaseballHi everyone, I’m back! ๐Ÿ™‚

We did end up doing a little yard sale shopping…although it was kind of late in the day for it. That was followed by the Chili Contest (sponsored by 4 Rivers Equipment) and an entertaining High Plains Music Ensemble concert (sponsored by Strasburg Veterinary Clinic and IREA). Michelle and Augie taste-tested the six entries and made their votes as I Facebook Live broadcasted most of the concert, which you can watch here:

We didn’t stop there…heading over to watch some Colorado Vintage Baseball (sponsored by the Friends of Strasburg Metro Parks and Rec):Continue Reading

Strasburg Home Town Days (2016) – Part 1

August 13, 2016 by Alan Leave a Comment

FlagsHello everyone…it has been a busy, busy, busy (but fun!) day already.

Up early ’cause the munchkin wanted Burger King (in Centennial) for breakfast, and we had to line up for the parade at 8:30. Translation: Awake before 6AM. My proof:

"Morning has broken..."

A beautiful view after a night in a backyard tent, eh?

Cubmaster Alan and Hank\'s Hardware mascotEither way…because, as Cubmaster for Strasburg Pack 439, I was marching in the parade…it meant I had to take all my photos and videos before or early-on (as I walked toward the back where we were placed). While we were waiting, I really liked this amazing cheer done for Strasburg Rocks! viewers by the Strasburg Parks Cheerleading Camp:

“We are Strasburg!” Well, at least Sparta and Strasburg both start with an “S”! ๐Ÿ™‚ The girls did great, didn’t they?!

I’ll wrap up this first post of the day by posting a gallery of very quickly taken pictures…along with two Facebook Live sessions. (I was either doing Facebook Live and taking pictures at the same time…or doing Facebook Live and interacting with parade watchers…so please be kind with your comments. :-))

Well, here are the photos and Facebook Live sessions (just remember, there is stuff going on through the whole weekend, so come on down/over/up!):Continue Reading

Flags, Driving, and Grain

August 12, 2016 by Alan Leave a Comment

I started vacation last night, so we are trying to make the most family time. Mom had to run out to get something for Cub Scout Pack 439‘s float (see it in tomorrow’s Strasburg Home Town Days parade)…and Augie wanted to go to Taco Bell for breakfast.

So, we climbed in the car…and even though it is a hybrid…we do need to get gas sooner or later. That’s where we got to see flags that that same Pack 439 put up:

God bless America and flagsContinue Reading

Braving a Storm #tentlife

July 30, 2016 by Alan Leave a Comment

Augie and dad in the tentOkay, it wasn’t much of a storm. ๐Ÿ™‚

But, Augie and I did our normal Friday night activity of sleeping in the tent last night, and although it was predicted in WeatherBug for midnight, it came through 10:30ish. Here are a few tweets during it…sneaking them out before waking up the little guy, heading to breakfast, and getting haircuts.

Good morning Strasburg and towns nearby! It’s a beautiful, high plains morning…may it be an awesome weekend for you!Continue Reading

Happy 4th of July! (2016)

July 4, 2016 by Alan Leave a Comment

Motorcyclist with American flagHappy Independence Day everyone! (240 awesome years and counting….)

I am just back from my Cub Scout Pack 439 Cubmaster duties. First, we marched with Troop 439 at the front of the Independence Day parade in Byers, Colorado. (I am so proud of our boys!) Second, we met up at Lions Park in Strasburg, ate lunch, and then watched a Cub Scout/Boy Scout/visitors water fight that moved from water balloons to squeezing water bottles at each other. ๐Ÿ™‚

The parade had all the usual…floats…old cars…politicians…emergency vehicles…and since we are in cowboy/cowgirl country…horses…and one goat. ๐Ÿ™‚

Now, I should note that I had to march in the parade, so I tried to snap photos of everything ahead of time. However, since we were at the front of the parade, I was able to take a bunch of pictures walking back to the car. Before sharing those images, however, here are four videos…starting off with the 2016 Dust Devils doing a little dancing:

Their float also has this cool fake shotgun action:Continue Reading

My First (Tornado)

July 3, 2016 by Alan Leave a Comment

Excitement here on Basil Street in Strasburg as we saw a tornado from our next door neighbor’s porch. It was the first sighting for my wife, eight year-old son, and me. First, a picture:

Tornado visible over roof top

Second, a video:

I did not hear of any injuries and am not sure it actually was more than a funnel cloud. We love Strasburg, but with every place you’ve got to take the bad with the good…

Cows and Airplanes

June 5, 2016 by Alan Leave a Comment

It could be I am such a simple man that pretty un-amazing things excite me, but as I was leaving breakfast at McDonald’s in Bennett, I really found this low-flying crop duster a lot of fun to watch (although I didn’t know it was a crop duster when I took the video):

Mom and the munchkin headed home in her car, and then I climbed on my bicycle for the eight miles back ride. Along the way I decided this might be a good way to spend the rest of Sunday:

Cows resting in a field

Alan in bicycling gear at end of rideWhether you are having a lazy Sunday like the cows…

Are working like the crop duster was…

Or are out-and-about exercising like I did earlier…

Here’s hopin’ you are having an awesome day!

#TentLife is Back!

May 15, 2016 by Alan 2 Comments

Although Augie and I hoped to camp out each Friday through winter…circumstances when it first became really chilly (below low 30s) meant we didn’t (e.g. Augie got a bad cold if I remember correctly).

However, I am proud to announce that we did start it back up for 2016 last night!:

Augie in the Fahrner tent

And, it appears we were enjoying it: ๐Ÿ™‚

Augie and dad in the tent

I think the low overnight was just 41…so we were toasty in our sleeping bags. I also believe it rained a tiny bit…but our Coleman Instant Tent kept us dry!

Finally, if you are interested…here are some highlights of my shortwave listening in the tent. It was a great night for shortwave radio…with some very far away and some first time finds (and a combination of both!)Continue Reading
